Family History Society of Arizona Upcoming ZOOM & in person Speakers/Topics:

Monday, February 13 - Fountain Hills - 9:00 am to 11:00 am @ Yavapai Room at the Fountain Hills Community Center - Germans from Russia - Elizabeth Scott
Elizabeth will discuss the unique cultural habits and immigration patterns of Germans who immigrated into America from Russia in the 19th and 20th century.  Known as, Germans from Russia, they originally settled in the Ukraine area of Russia at the invitation of Czarina Catherine the Great and subsequent Czars.  As their situation became dangerous in Russia and their way of life was threatened, they moved to South America and the US, where  large concentrations settled in the Dakotas and Great Plains states, and they still hold many traditional customs and values.
In-Person meeting only - Fountain Hills, Arizona
About Elizabeth:
Sparked by family hints about a couple of interesting ancestors, Elizabeth Scott has been researching her geneology for 15 years. Activity in local chapters of Germans from Russia Heritage Society (GRHS) and American Historical Society of Germans from Russia (AHSGR) has led to her increased knowledge of this unique cultural group of Americans.

Saturday, March 18 - 2023 Virtual Saturday Annual Meeting  (5 Meetings) - 8:00 am to 4:00 pm                                          Featuring:
Diana Elder - Pedigree Triangulation: A Key Methodology for Genetic Genealogy
Learn the power of pedigree triangulation in analyzing DNA matches and building your genetic family tree. Discover how to use company tools such as Ancestry’s Thrulines and MyHeritage’s Theory of Family Relativity to boost your efficiency and accelerate your discovery of common ancestors. We’ll discuss the basic steps of analyzing the amount of shared DNA, then building incomplete trees, and comparing surnames and locations.

Drew Smith - Introduction to GEDmatch
GEDmatch is a free website that allows uploading raw DNA data from DNA testing companies so that the test data can be compared with data from tests taken at different companies. It also provides tools that may not be available at the original testing company. This presentation will focus on the basics of using GEDmatch to match relatives

Katherine R. Willson - The 1918 Influenza Pandemic and Its Effect on Our American Ancestors
More Americans were killed by the global 1918 Influenza (Spanish Flu) Pandemic than in the Great War. This virus had tragic implications on our ancestors’ communities and in their own families. Review the timeline of the pandemic’s spread, the direct and indirect effect of this health crisis on individuals, and the sources to consult for a greater understanding of its impact.

Diane L. Richard - Death Records by a Different Name
Let’s discuss over 20 different places where we might find documentation of a death. We are not talking obituaries, cemetery records, probate records, death certificates and the records that most of us regularly pursue. We are talking of some of the many other records which might be created and document the death of your ancestors.

Curt Witcher - Using PERSI and Periodicals for Genealogy Research
You may miss up to one third of source materials, leads, record copies, transcriptions, indices and the like if we ignore data in periodical literature.  Using periodicals supports the first point of the Genealogical Proof Standard— reasonably exhaustive research has been completed.

Thursday, March 9, 2023 - “Ancestral Road Trips, Part II: Go West Young Man” With Madeline Yanov  (CCCGS Meetings) - 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
Via Zoom - Registration Required
As American colonies grew, people migrated to the frontier in search of more space, land, and job opportunities. Part II of this lecture begins with the Louisiana Purchase, and Lewis and Clark Expedition. With the acquisition of more land, people felt the need to explore and settle the country from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans. Viewers will see what routes and trails their ancestors traveled from the 1820s until the Civil War, beginning in the Midwest and pushing to the Pacific Coast, and southwest to Texas and New Mexico. We will focus on the Santa Fe Trail, Mormon Pioneer Trail, the Oregon Trail, California trails, the Trail of Tears, and many other minor trails. Also, we will discuss the part the transcontinental railroad played in the settling of America.
